I'm writing this blog about the book Emma by Jane Austen. I'm interested in it because it has my name. My Mum named me Emma when I was born. My middle name is Lynette. Jane Austen's Emma is Emma Woodhouse. I like all kinds of Emmas, Emma Watson, and Emma Stone are both actresses, and Rachel from Friends also names her baby Emma. Jane Austen's Emma Woodhouse is a classic character. I'm curious to know more about the heroine of this book, to find out if we are similar.
Jane Austin describes Emma as "handsome, clever and rich." Emma is spoiled, headstrong, popular and likes matchmaking her friends, which means she is interested in romance. So far it sounds like me! Her mother passed away when she was younger, but that's not the same as me. Emma often behaves in a frivolous or selfish way, it says online. When Alice read this out, Emma laughed and said... "Yep!" She's not always thinking of other people's feelings but the people close to her know that she has a good heart.
I just like the heart, thats my own character. I have courage, brightness, and colours in my life. I have the courage to fill up my heart with love for friends, family and romance. I also have "sweetness, good nature and pleasant looks" like it says about one of the characters Harriet Smith.
Emma says she doesn't want to get married, unless she falls deeply in love, but finds herself in love with Mr. George Knightly. She doesn't realise she is in love with him until she is jealous, first of Jane Fairfax, and then Harriet Smith.
This book was writing in 1815. I know women in Jane Austin's time couldn't vote or do many the things they can today. But Jane Austin always writes about them as intelligent and respected by the men they choose to love.
I'd like to see the movie of Emma or Pride and Prejudice. There is also a film called Becoming Jane about the author Jane Austin. I'd like to write romantic novels one day too, and poetry like Jane Austen's poetry. But I think it would be so hard to do that kind of story! About our good hearts and foolish mistakes, about love as well. About people like the 'Emmas' who may not always behave in the 'right way' but still always have love in their heart.
