I'm not a kid but some kids like those movies How To You Train your Dragon. I was studying this movie recently at bus stop films. I wonder which century the idea of dragons came from? Do you think there were ever dragons, do you think they were just made up? Its difficult to know where the first dragons came from. We'll look them up. We can see that there were dragons in European and Chinese cultures. They sometimes represent wisdom. That can change the way we view the world. They have a forked tongue like lizards and snakes. Some people believe dragons taught humans to talk like in Chinese myths. I think its a bit gross and sloppy! In Harry Potter the snake tongue was used for evil. Maybe those snakes didn't train well. I prefer the dragons you can train to the evil ones.
Of Latin, Language and Dragon Stones
By Emma Brodie
with Anna Maria Dell'oso
Emma: Latin is the language of the ancient people of Rome. It's the language of 'romance' but that doesn't mean modern romance. A romanza was a novel or long story, which I learned from blogging with Alice. I want to know more about that, about romance and romanza and how it is all from Latin. Can you tell me why?
Anna: It's hard for me to tell you much about that, Emma, because it's so old and I don't know all that much about ancient history. But do you really mean you want to know more about the love poems written in Latin?
Emma: Yes! Can you find that book in the library?
Anna: "Well we can look a few things up on the internet right now. Did Alice tell you about the poems of Catullus? He was a famous love poet of Ancient Rome."
"Catullus? He's taken, is he?
"Yes, and he died hundreds of years ago."
"And all the women he was in love with are dead?
"Well and truly. They have been dead for more than two thousand years. Let's read some of his poems and tell me the lines you like."
Emma: "Hmm ... reading Catullus poems, I think they are a bit dark aren't they?"
Anna: "Yes, you could say so because he could be very bitter sometimes about losing his girlfriends."
Emma: "I want to write with darkness like that. I don't know how to. They don't have Latin crystals do they?"
Anna: "Actually, the funny thing is that most of the gemstones you like have Latin names."
"Really? I didn't know that! It's so hard to know of the details of these things!
"Emma, you love those words don't you? I think you love the words as much as the stones."
"Yes I love them. I want to find the crystals of those words."
"Do you mean you want to find the stones that match the words?"
"Yes, in Latin."
Anna: "Ok, well, it says here ... like lapis lazuli, for instance. That's lapis, Latin for stone. Lazuli is apparently Medieval Latin from Arabic and interestingly most of those stones come from Afghanistan, which is in the Middle East."
Emma: "It sounds interesting, like a dragon place to me. They have wonderful jewels in those places."
"Yes and you know what, the Middle East is the place where they set the legend of Aladdin."
"Really? So it has history set in it?"
"Yes. Many jewels come from far away."
"All the colourful stones from those faraway countries - maybe they have the Dragonstone?"
"Where does that come from Emma?"
"From my head. Maybe there is a picture of it somewhere - can we look?"
"Hmm ... Well, it's not in your crystal and gem book, it's probably from fantasy books about dragons, is it? Let's look on Google ... OMG, Emma, they're real, there are actually crystals called Dragonstones - look, here they are! They're incredible, they look like the stripes on tiger's fur!!!! And, Emma, they're actually really called 'septa rain stones or septarian' and that comes from the Latin words for seven, septem, referring to the number of cracks that commonly occur ... Ok, let me read this out to you: "Septarian are strong Shamanic stones harnessing the different vibrational energies of the stones they are made up of. A combination of calcite, limestone (chalcedony) and aragonite, this stone brings a very calming, protective energy that is ancient and magical." Wow, how about that, Emma?"
Emma: "And evilness from dragons?"
Anna: "No because these are really good power stones."
Emma: "Some dragons are trained of not losing their tempers and they belong to goddesses."
Anna: "Like Daenerys in Game of Thrones?"
Emma: "and like some Vikings as well, who try to kill the dragons ...
Anna: "Hold on, Emma, we're going all over the mythical map here and I'm getting lost ... Let's go back to the Dragonstone itself and find out more about it."
Emma: "Yes let's do the Vikings another time."
Anna: "Good plan. Ok here we go: Dragonstone: 'A phenomenal stone for connecting you with your guides, Septarian expands the waking consciousness of the third eye and crown chakras and enables the throat chakra to assist you in delivering your healing guidance. Available now and on sale in pendants, polished palm stones and polished free forms ...'"
"What's 'connecting with your guides' mean? What's a guide?"
"Hmm, I suppose they mean your guide is a beautiful spirit in the form of -
"A princess?"
"Well it's an imaginary guide inside you that might feel like a princess ... probably you can think of them like your romance card Angels ..."
"Maybe there are angel stones and dragon stones ... The myths of it make me feel like I want to know more about Latin, about Paris ..."
"What else do the words make you feel? What do they remind you of?"
Emma: "Those words remind me that there is world of exciting discoveries,
like a big cave inside me and I don't know what's inside the cave."
Anna: "Awesome Ems, keep going! What's it like in the cave?"
Emma: "It might be cold and icy frozen, or it might be warm with dragons inside melting the air with anger - or not losing their tempers because they have dragon minds thinking.
Anna: Wow Emma, they're great words, give me more, writergirl!!! What else is happening in the cave?"
Emma: "It's hard to think of it."
Anna: "I know, Emma, but stay inside the cave, OK? Now look at the cards and tell me some lovely ending-a poem type of words ..."
Emma "The golden arrow of music of the voice of the treasures ...
Makes a siren song and the dragons go down to listen ... Anna, can you tell me, is it like when the fire meets the water, then it is to make Dragonstone? "
Anna: "You tell me, Emma, it's your poem."
Emma: "Yes, they go down there into the dark to make dragon jewels."
Dragonstone
A world of exciting discoveries like big cave inside me:
I don't know what's inside.
Maybe it's cold and icy frozen
Maybe it's warm with dragons inside,
Melting the air with their anger
Or not losing their tempers,
For they have their dragon minds thinking ...
Still the golden arrow of music, voice of the treasures,
Sings a siren song ...
The dragons go down to listen;
They go there, where the fire meets the water -
Down they go, down, down,
Into the dark to make dragon jewels.
